“Antitrust Complaints Prompt Changes to Vista”

Antitrust Complaints Prompt Changes to Vista - New York Times

I’m not quite sure how I feel about this one.  On one side, Microsoft is forcing all users to use their built-in search software, shutting Google’s free (and perhaps more customer-friendly) search engine out.

On the other hand, Mac OS X uses Spotlight.  What’s the difference between Vista’s search and Spotlight?  Can Spotlight be turned off?  If not, why isn’t Apple also a part of this battle?

I’m not sure what this has to do with antitrust.  I thought antitrust was giving consumers no choice when it comes to buying something - no competition.  But the consumer has already made the choice (however good or bad) to buy Vista.  Could I file an antitrust complaint because my Dell printer doesn’t work with HP ink cartridges?

But - if I own a piece of software, I expect there to be an “advanced” mode in which I can configure settings and toggle features on and off.  Come on Microsoft - just give your users an option, and let’s quit wasting everyone’s money in court.
